I began this blog in order to transcribe letters that my grandmother Mary Frances Macnaghten wrote when she visited America in 1926. She was born in London in 1903 the eldest of the three daughters of Sir Malcolm Macnaghten, a High Court judge and the MP for Londonderry for six years from 1922. Mary, Bridget and Anne Macnaghten spent their childhoods in Kensington and in Northern Ireland. Notwithstanding their privileged background and upbringing, all three girls were to become socialists.

However my current focus is the diaries of Mary’s mother Antonia Macnaghten nee Booth who was the daughter of Mary Macaulay and the social researcher and reformer Charles Booth.

Much of the material I am using is gleaned from other sources which I endeavour to credit appropriately. No copyright infringement or plagiarism is intended.
